3 essential tips for choosing living room furniture

Posted on February 9th, 2021 by Feiges.

There’s an art to selecting furniture. Knowing what’s right for your living room space, picking pieces that complement each other, and arranging them just so requires no small amount of skill. Luckily, it’s a skill that anyone can learn — and even master. Read on for some tips on how to choose living room furniture correctly.

Work around a focal point

The focal point is where your eye will automatically be drawn when you enter a room. When designing a room, you should always consider: Is there one particular item you want to show off as the center of attention? It could be a fireplace, architectural feature, or stand-out item of furniture like a uniquely shaped table or a statement-making sofa.

If you lack ideas, consider installing a mirror, wall art, or hanging to make a focal point. Then, you can build the rest of the room around that point. Choose furnishings that align with the main piece’s style, and take care not to choose anything that will rival or overpower it. You can go all-out on a colorful sofa, for instance, and then select slightly more muted tones for the rest of the room, with little sparks of color here and there.

Go big first

Put the most extensive furniture items first, typically the couch, coffee table, or entertainment console. This will help you see how the furniture actually works within the space, and you can move on to fill up the rest of the place with a clear basic layout in mind.

Once that’s in place, you can move onto smaller accouterments like ottomans, side tables, and smaller shelves, matching it to the larger pieces’ aesthetic. Finally, you can add decorative elements like lamps, vases, wall art, and more. Once the most significant seeds have been planted, you can slowly see the room start to bloom.

Cater to your needs

It may seem obvious, but it bears repeating: living rooms are made to be lived in. Don’t feel pressured to make your living room look like a design spread or conform to any particular format. What matters most is that the room serves your needs and is comfortable and practical. Think about what you value most in space. For instance, if you enjoy having people over often, you might want to design a space for people to congregate by arranging furniture in a horseshoe shape. Space is yours to play with.
