The connections between the contemporary and the modern
There is something about a piece of well-crafted classically-designed furniture that most of us find intrinsically appealing. You don’t need to be an expert in woodworking or textile design to appreciate the elegance and craftsmanship of a piece of fine furniture.
But while there is still a premium attached to hand-crafted furniture, modern manufacturing methods have enabled us to expand our thinking and embrace design ideas that would have been unthinkable several decades ago. The Feige’s Interiors collection from Precedent Furniture demonstrates this neatly.
Modern furniture can be made using traditional design principles, but many people prefer something more contemporary. Let’s take a look at some of the connections between contemporary and modern furniture design.
Modern Vs. Contemporary
If you are thinking to yourself, “But ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ mean the same thing?” You’re not wrong. The words ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ are often used interchangeably. However, when we are discussing furniture, these words have slightly different meanings.
The subtle difference between modern and contemporary with regards to furniture is this; ‘modern’ furniture design refers to furniture from the early to mid-twentieth century. The latter half of the twentieth century until today, the period we refer to as ‘contemporary,’ saw the advent of numerous significant design and manufacturing techniques.
The first half of the twentieth century saw the world rocked by world wars before being accelerated through seismic shifts in the fields of design and technology. Modern furniture designs from designers like Precedent Furniture reflect the main principles at play. Contemporary furniture builds on these principles, combining them with subsequent manufacturing advances.
Minimalism
As you can see from the Precedent Furniture that we carry at Feige’s Interiors, minimalism is one of the cornerstones of modern furniture design. Antique furniture is often prized for its ornate decorative features. But those ornate touches are less impressive when you have machines building the pieces.
Smooth surfaces
Hard corners usually look out of place on contemporary furniture. With modern furniture, we saw designers begin to move towards smoother surfaces and corners. Chairs and couches used to have rigidly-defined roles in most people’s homes.
But the couches we sell from Precedent Furniture at Feige’s Interiors are just as good for laying down and lazing out on as they are for watching TV with the family or even cuddling up to that special someone. Hard edges and corners make furniture less versatile.
Neutral colors
You will notice modern and contemporary furniture from Precedent Furniture because the color schemes are neutral. This enhances each piece’s versatility while also allowing the owner to accent with colored cushions and other simple enhancements easily.
