Rug Trends: Spring 2018
Size

Large, room-sized rugs are replacing accent rugs as the best size to put in your home. Many homes today have an open floor plan, which usually means the kitchen, dining, and gathering area are in one large space without walls or entryways to separate rooms. Using a large rug in your gathering area helps define the space by creating separation from the other areas without cutting off the flow of the open-floor concept.
Colors

Rugs with intense, saturated colors are making a comeback. Rather than blending in, rugs have become the artwork and a focal point of a room. Colorful rugs make a bright accent against natural color palettes in the floor and sofa. However, these aren’t the typical reds and blues we used to see in the classic hand-knotted rugs. Updated color palettes, such as indigo, ink and spa or clear reds, melon, and claret, are here to modernize this trend.
For a calmer color palette, monochromatic rugs provide a serene vibe. Popular color combinations for this trend include taupe, putty, and warm grey or apple, sage, and malachite. Often, these rugs will have more unique texture combinations in order to add interest to the piece.
Style

Texture, Texture, Texture!
Mixing and layering textures is a very popular trend across interior design. Not only can you combine different textures in your home through the floor, fireplace, cabinets, countertops, and accent pieces, but you can also create the interest of different textures within your rug. Many rugs are made with various types of wools and fibers as well as different shearing techniques in order to create different textures within one piece.
Coarser wool provides a rugged, nubby texture whereas Merino wool is a softer, plumper fiber that gives a luxurious feel. Viscose and silk fibers are used to accentuate the pattern and look of the rug by providing a sheen effect. Weaving these different types of materials together creates variety in the texture of the rug. Once the weaving of the rug is completed, hand scissors are used to shear the pile of the rug at various levels for visual interest.
Modern, vintage, and nomadic are some of the key styles right now, but don’t feel the need to stick to just one style. You can use several styles of rugs throughout your house to cultivate an interesting combination between rooms. Create harmony by using the same style rugs in the main entertaining area of your home, but mix it up by using different styles in the master suite, home office, and other rooms throughout the house.
Modern style rugs continue to be popular both in the abstract, large-scale motif as well as in the small-scale, repeated pattern for textural effect. Vintage rugs add a nostalgia and comfort to the home. Most often classic patterns are used in vintage-inspired rugs, but in washed or faded colors to update the look. Nomadic style provides an authentic, but relaxed mood for rugs. Having this style rug is like wearing your favorite blue jeans – it just feels good. The Nomadic pattern tends to be more geometric in rich or neutral earth tones. Nomadic style rugs add a nice charm in smaller accent sizes for rooms in the secondary part of the house such as hallways, the home office, or the guest bedroom.
